“How Complicated Do You Need

- Or Even Want -

Your Dive Log To Be?”

When you come out of the water at the end of a dive how much time do you want to spend filling out your dive log? Do you work your way across that log page checking each little box for every piece of scuba equipment that you used during your dive?

Or do you make entries for different bits of information that, to you, are more important? And do you have the empty areas on your dive log pages to make those valued notations?

This is Joe, and (probably like you) when I first became certified I use the “official” dive log supplied to me by the certifying agency. (In my case that was PADI.) After my first few dives though I began skipping past some of those little graphics that were splattered all over the page. They just weren’t all that important to me, and I didn’t enjoy the time it cost me to visit every checkbox, and picture just to make sure I gave the whole thing my attention.

I’d rather fill in a quick dive report, and go visit with my dive buddies, talking about the day’s diving experiences.

The one thing I do take a little time with is my thoughts about the dive I just enjoyed. What kind of fish did I visit with? How close did those fish come to me in their curiosity? What unique incidents occurred? What new experiences happened for me during the dive?

And I need plenty of space to write about those thoughts.

My Favorite Dive Log Is A Simple One

I don’t need a bunch of stuff clogging the page, and leaving me with no space for my writing. So over the years I created my own log inserts. After a dive I make the entries I want to make, and later as I review the dive I update my log file to reflect any new items that weren’t there before.

Those updates haven’t happened much for quite a while now because I’m pretty happy with my current version.

Here’s what it looks like:

I have it formatted for a 3″ by 5″ size page so I print two page on each side of a letter size sheet of paper. What you see above fits into the top half of the page, and that leaves me with the bottom half to write all about my dive. Whenever I run low on pages in my log I just print a few out, cut the sheets in half, punch three holes in them, and stick them in my log book.

Then I’m ready to descend.

Now Available For You

I got to thinking that maybe other divers might like a simple log to fill out after leaving the water. So I turned my log into a PDF version to make available to you if you’re interested. Then I thought a bit longer, and decided to offer it in a version you can customize to your own preference.

You can get my log file free below. You’ll get it in the PDF version, but I’ll also give you a version in Open Office. In case you aren’t familiar with Open Office, it’s a free suite of software that rivals MS Office. It has a word processing program, a spreadsheet program, and other functions like a calculator, and a graphics drawing program.

You can get your free copy here: http://openoffice.org

My dive log is editable in its Open Office Writer form, so you can tweak it any way you want, and personalize it to your own style of diving.

Just fill in your information below. The download location will be emailed to you.

P.S. My simple dive log is easy and quick to fill out with the information that I most desire from every dive. With plenty of space to write about what I observed underwater my memories of the dive refresh every time I look at the page. No matter how long ago I enjoyed the actual experience.

P.P.S. Grab a copy of my dive log file, and a copy of Open Office, and tweak it for a dive log version that best suits your divng style. And happy diving.
