Your Questions About Scuba Diving How To Equalize

Posted on by admin

Sandy asks…

scuba help, every time i dive after about 2 dives i cant equalize?

ok so after about 2 dives at like 60 feet for 30 min i cant equalize in my left ear. one time i was doing a shark dive and i was on the top about 10 feet under having this problem, panicking because the sharks under me and the instructor panicking to get me down i forced it to equalize but i immediately noticed this was a problem so i went up and my ear didn't relieve the pressure so i was in extreme pain for about an hour feeling like my eardrum was going to rip .. does anyone know why this is happening, or how to solve this problem thank you, (im a 16 yr old diver who usually dives at least 3 times a year, but im planing on diving more often and ive been diving since i was 12 or 13)

The first thing I would do is always descend on a rope. That way if you feel pressure, and can't equalize you can hold yourself at a specific depth by hanging onto the rope.

If your ears won't equalize ascend a few feet to clear at a shallower depth.

If that doesn't happen I wouldn't force clear. If your ears won't clear you should end the dive. If you keep descending you risk damage, and hearing loss at a maximum.

See an ear specialist who has scuba diving experience to find out what your problem is, and get it fixed.

Betty asks…

Why do my ears keep popping?

My ears pop all the time and it gets really annoying as it can be quite painful at times, I usually just equalise (hold nose and blow) and it's quite hard to get back to normal and can put me in some discomfort. I go scuba diving quite a lot and am not sure if this has anything to do with it but they sometimes pop right after I get out of the shower but sometimes completly randomly. Again, I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it but my jaw locks when I move it to the far right and always makes a "click" everytime I move my jaw but it isn't painful. I only mention this because another method of equalising when scuba diving is "wobbling your jaw" Any ideas on why it is happening and how I can try and fix it? Thank you.

I suggest you check with an ear, nose, throat doctor who scuba dives. (Or at least has scuba-related knowledge about the ear canals.)

Sharon asks…

Can deaf people scuba dive?

How do they know when to equalize their ears? Can they hear their ear drums? Any info would be great

admin answers:

Divers learn to start equalizing as soon as they start their descent. The first indication that clearing didn't happen is the feeling of pressure in the ears. Doesn't have anything to do with sound.

As long as a person can feel the increasing water pressure, s/he can equalize after proper training.

Steven asks…

how to get rid of water in the ears?

hello all, i always manage to get water in my ears after swimming, but in november I'm off to mexico to do scuba diving and i don't want this to turn into a problem i.e. an ear infection or trouble equalising underwater. what does everyone suggest? ear buds dont help much.. thank you for any help :)

admin answers:

Wearing ear plugs while scuba diving could severely damage your ears.

Try an ear drying solution after your dives. You can get them at the drugstore. Or simply dilute isopropyl alcohol by 70% with fresh water.
